Hi,
I am a danish doctor and I am considering going to N.Y. to work as a doctor for many reasons no 1: my sister lives there.
How hard is it getting jobs there? Will I Have to take the big exam, if it is only for 3 or 6 month my stay will last?
I heard that all I need is a invitation fra a american hospital (in N.Y)?
Hope you can help me.
Best regards,
Marie.
Dear Marie,
if you are planning to work as a clinical physician then your job is difficult – you must do the USMLE exams (from the beginning – non-US qualifications count for nothing). Also, you need an “invitation” from an American hospital, but this is difficult to arrange as it requires them to process a lot of paperwork and apply for a visa, which is time-consuming.
Your other alternative is to get a research position. This is much easier, especially if you have skills that can be used in a laboratory, but it still takes a while for your visa application to process.
In other words, this takes organizing and should not be a short-term plan.
